We can’t hold guided walks in person at the moment, because of limits on numbers, but thanks to a brilliant collaboration between the museum’s own Meg Wise, Claire Jaggard of My Thornbury and Chipping Sodbury photographer Rich McD, we can offer you an online photographic walk along the line of Thornbury’s railway.
Many thanks to Meg, Claire and Rich for putting this walk together.
Check it out. There will be so many things you didn’t know about Thornbury’s railway line!

I found the Hidden Railway very interesting and remember the gangers helping get the hay in at Vilner, after a day’s work. Someone still walks the line, seven miles each week between Yate and the quarry for maintenance purposes. I had a friend who travelled from Iron Acton to attend Thornbury Grammar School. The last coalman to operate was John Shipp, before he became the publican at the White Lion.

It’s great to learn that the railway gangers helped out with the hay-gathering, that people from Iron Acton used the railway to attend school in Thornbury and that a publican at The White Lion was the last coalman on the railway. And it’s fascinating that the stretch of line which still operates between Yate and Tytherington Quarry is still physically walked each week to ensure the good condition of the line.
Thanks so much for sharing your recollections of the railway, Janice.
