Traders

All kinds of traders operate in Thornbury today and the same was true in the past.

Drapers and ironmongers, grocers and butchers all flourished and advertised in the local press. We have trade cards and advertisements for many local businesses.

Health and safety regulations have reduced the numbers of butchers we have in the town. At one time, butchers slaughtered animals in their backyards. Rules about standards needed in abattoirs put an end to that. Here’s a beautiful photograph of a cart making deliveries from Ogborn’s butchers shop in the High Street.
