Can you remember scenes like this in Thornbury? It wasn’t so very long ago that sheep, cattle and pigs were being auctioned in the town.
In fact, Thornbury’s livestock market kept going until 1996.
When people describe Thornbury as ‘a market town’, they’re not joking. It’s been one for over 900 years!
A hundred and five years ago, livestock markets were still being held around the town pump, with cattle roaming around the top of Castle Street and the bottom of the High Street. You had to watch your step if you wanted to cross the street to the bank!
If you want to find out more about the history of Thornbury as a market town, come on our June evening walk.
