Sandi Shallcross is at the heart of museum operations and continues to be so but she has recently stepped down from chairing the Council of Thornbury and District Heritage Trust, the governing body of the museum. Her leadership of the Trust is celebrated on the website of the South West Federation of Museums and Art Galleries.

Tickets are selling fast for our next Winter Talk. Last night’s talk on Thornbury and the Railway was a sell-out with 90 people attending and many last-minute applicants disappointed.

In June 1900, you could have entered a Gentlemen’s Sock Darning Competition – and won three shillings as first prize. For the ‘Ladies’, there was a competition to drive in nails – with equal prize money! Women judged the men and men judged the women.

We’ve just had a donation which will bring back memories for lots of Thornbury families.
We’ve been given Nurse Cotton’s midwife’s bag. Edith Cotton was the District Nurse for Thornbury from 1947 to 1978 and during that time is said to have delivered around 1,800 local babies!

There’s still some colour in our small courtyard garden but this year will see the end of the garden’s Roman theme. Rosie, our ‘Head Gardener’, has plans for a different theme next year.

With the help of the Friends of the Museum, we’ve just been able to buy a ‘Death Penny’ relating to a locally born man who died in the First World War. It’s a large object, as wide as a man’s hand.
