No idea what happened in 1252? Clue: It was a significant date for local people….
Still no idea? OK, we’ll tell you!
1252 was the year when Richard de Clare – earl of Gloucester at the time – created the Borough of Thornbury.
Of course, Thornbury had existed before then. After all, it’s mentioned in Domesday Book as having a market in 1086.
But it was given proper Borough status in 1252, with a defined Borough Boundary. A two-and-a-half mile boundary was agreed.
On Saturday 10th September, you can walk that boundary by accompanying museum volunteers as they lead a FREE Heritage Weekend walk around the boundary – over pavements, fields and stiles!
