A change of plan here at the museum. We’d intended to open the new year with an exhibition on ‘Hatches, Matches and Dispatches’. But we found there was much too much material to fit into one exhibition. So we think we can probably have three separate exhibitions, with the ‘ Hatches’ (or ‘Hatching’?) one scheduled for May.
Instead, our opening exhibition of the new year, ‘Fetch the Engine!’, will focus on the heroic story of fire-fighting locally. Museum volunteers are beavering away putting final touches to the exhibition which will open next week, on Tuesday 3rd February, when the museum re-opens after its six weeks of winter closure for cleaning, maintenance and stocktaking.
There are lots of good stories to be told and many local people will be featured. Discover the part played in fire-fighting by the hooter at Mr. Cullimore’s Sawmill. Find out about the involvement of Sir Stafford Howard of Thornbury Castle. And just who are the men pictured here?
We probably don’t have all the answers. You may be able to show us stories and photographs of your own…
